Murder ?   Culpable Homicide ? The Sad End of “Manager “ Poon’s Life.

The Singapore Penal Code provides that when a person dies of unnatural death, suspicion of murder, culpable  homicide etc arises. “Manager” Poon was found dead in a Police lock-up after he was found sprawled on the floor outside a bar by the Police. Here’s a story about him.

When the Writer  was still in Primary School, a friend of an uncle used to come to our previous shop at No. 67, Pagoda Street to chit chat with my elder brothers and me on  week-end evenings. His  name was Poon Chi Keong (PCK) and he lived in a shophouse along Tanjong Pagar Road with his elder brother and his family. Their  relationship with him was not warm. PCK’s  pride and joy was his Vespa scooter which he rode to everywhere. He bought it with part of the compensation money he was given for an earlier accident and with  his hard -earned savings.

With limited skill and little education, PCK took on menial daily-rated ship-repair jobs to earn a living. When he was younger, PCK met with a serious  motor accident which left him with several broken bones on his right arm and leg. What was worse was that his fractured jaw was displaced off-centre as  a permanent disfigurement. It earned him the nickname “Left -Mouth Fish” 左口鱼, a reference to the sole-fish which has its eyes and mouth on one side of its surface.

With his limited economic prospects and physical disfigurement, PCK could not find a girlfriend for himself. To relieve his  loneliness and disappointment, whenever he could afford it, PCK would seek the company of bar-girls and consume drinks for solace.  In the company of bar-girls, to boost his own ego and self-image, he told the girls he was a “Manager”. In those days, to hold the position of “Manager” was some thing to be reckoned with. Friends of PCK who heard of his self-proclaimed position, teased him with another nickname – “Manager Poon – 番经理“.

One evening, PCK went for his usual “solace-seeking” outing. Alas, it turned out to be his last. In his drunken state it seemed he offended some other bar patrons who beat him up. He was found outside the bar by the Police and thrown into the Police lock-up because it was assumed he was just drunk and would recover with some rest.

When he did not recover after a few hours, PCK was sent to the hospital. By then he  was dead from brain haemorrhage. Did he accidentally hit  his head against something hard which caused the brain haemorrhage ? Was he assaulted by assailant or assailants whom he was said to have offended while in the bar ? Was any one charged for causing his death ? Unfortunately no answers  to these questions were available.

  1. I was curious if you ever considered changing the page layout of your
website? Its very well written; I love what youve got to say.
But maybe you could a little more in the way of content so people could connect with
it better. Youve got an awful lot of text for only having 1 or 2 pictures.
Maybe you could space it out better?

Thank you for your comments/input. Will try to improve on presentation. But honestly, being not so IT savvy, just don’t what I could. Keep well and stay safe. Cheers 1
